Turandot, a play by Carlo Gozzi based on a traditional Chinese myth, takes us on a journey through the story of a beautiful princess who hated men. In order to escape the pressure exerted by her father, the Emperor of China, to marry, she devises a clever and diabolical scheme: the solving of three difficult riddles in a contest that every prospective suitor is forced to undergo. Failure means beheading. The result is a multitude of princely victims, unable to solve the three riddles, until the appearance of the one suitable young man for the strange princess, who will lead events to an unexpected and decisive resolution. This allegorical, fairy-tale story later inspired Giacomo Puccini, who composed the opera Turandot.
