Kefallinias Street Theatre — Stage A
First performance: November 3, 2010
In the curious, poetic, and surreal world of Federico García Lorca, family and society antagonise those that they deem unworthy, and only a few can seek freedom and pay its price. In a highly dramatic work, perhaps his best, Lorca creates portraits of unique women. Five daughters and their mother are tormented by erotic passion, jealousy, and loneliness.
Through Bernarda’s repressed daughters, Lorca narrates a unique love story, one in which love turns into calamity, obedience becomes complicity, and motherhood becomes a crime.
“The most passionate people hide,” says Federico García Lorca, and they are often alone. Only a few can fight back against loneliness and oppression.
