The Third Wedding Wreath – Kostas Tachtsis

2025

Art Theatre Karolos Koun
First Performance: October 22, 2025

Production: Lykofos / Giorgos Likiardopoulos

The cultural organization Lykofos, the Art Theatre Karolos Koun, Stathis Livathinos with his regular ensemble, and Stratis Paschalis venture a subversive proposal based on the emblematic novel that marked Greek postwar literature, bringing to the stage the ever-relevant The Third Wedding by Kostas Tachtsis. A profoundly Greek work—a harsh, moving Greek text. A text “dangerously” everyday, which uses 20th-century Greece as its wrapping in order to speak about the present.

Fifteen talented performers encounter the novel’s multiple faces and masks, the author’s unconventional writing style, and the personality that permeates every page of the book.

Two women. Nina and Hecuba. Caught in the vortex of memory and life. A memory that is aggressive, that yields to sensations and recollections of years gone by, summoning figures who marked their lives—those who stayed, who left, or who were lost. And a life that is now, that places everyday existence under the microscope and makes people taste every bitterness and every smile. Two women who survive in a male-dominated society, breaking the norms of their time and foreshadowing what is to come.

Nina and Hecuba take us on a journey through Greece: the Greece of Pavlos Melas, the Balkan Wars, the Interwar period, and Metaxas—but also of the Occupation, the Civil War, and the December Events. A Greece that changes over the years, yet somehow always remains the same.

The Third Wedding, an immortal narrative, mirrors a familiar Greece, inviting us to bravely confront our own reflection in its characters…

Nina, Antonis, Ioannis, Eleni, Dimitris, Maria, Hecuba, Polyxeni, Miltiadis, Aphrodite, Achilles…
