The Cherry Orchard – Anton Chekhov

2009

Praxi Theatre Company
Kefallinias Street Theatre — Stage A
First performance: Wednesday, December 16, 2009

A house in the countryside with the most beautiful cherry orchard in the area is on the brink of bankruptcy and collapse.

The almost indifferent bourgeois owners do nothing to keep it from being sold. They are losing their beloved ancestral home, and all they can do is look at it and reminisce… Reliving their childhood memories, nostalgic for their former glory days, dancing, laughing, flirting.

Nothing makes them regret their decision, even when they hear the axes striking hard, cutting down their beloved cherry trees. Anton Chekhov, through his work, depicts the constant decay of daily life in 20th-century Russia, while also allowing for a note of hope for the future and making an accurate prediction of the revolution that would follow.
